The City and Guilds of London Institute Founded in 1878, was founded by the Corporation of the City of London and 16 livery companies (the Guilds), to protect and promote the standard of technical education. The Group’s purpose is the same today as it was 140 years ago – to help people, organisations and economies develop their skills for growth.
The Challenge
City & Guilds faced significant challenges with their manual back-office processes, relying heavily on Excel, email, and copy-pasting data across multiple internal systems. This resulted in inefficiencies and an outdated workflow that hindered their ability to manage assessments effectively. Additionally, many assessors were older individuals with limited computer knowledge, and many worked from remote locations with low internet bandwidth.
Solutions
- Developed a cloud-based web application to transition from manual processes to an online system, offering improved efficiency and ease of use.
- Designed a user-friendly interface tailored to users with minimal computer skills, including many remote assessors, utilizing ASP.Net MVC, C#, jQuery, AngularJS, CSS 3.0, HTML 5.0, and Entity Framework 6.0.
- Implemented a workflow system for the entire assessment process:
- Submission of assessments by centers to ILM
- Marking lifecycle, focused on assessing learner evidence and updating result sheets
- Reporting on the marking lifecycle for enhanced visibility and tracking
- The system design is extensible to accommodate future developments, ensuring long-term scalability and adaptability.
Key Outcomes
PearlArc’s web application for ILMA transformed manual operations into a streamlined, automated process, resulting in a 40% reduction in administrative time, a 30% increase in user satisfaction due to ease of use, and enhanced scalability for future growth.
