The British Medical Association (BMA) is the trade union and professional body that represents doctors in the UK, advocating for their rights and well-being. It plays a key role in collective bargaining, negotiating pay, improving working conditions, and shaping healthcare policy. In addition to this, the BMA provides a wide range of services to support doctors, including career development, legal assistance, and resources for professional growth. It also works to promote doctors’ health and well-being, offering support for mental and physical health challenges. By publishing journals, conducting surveys, and gathering data, the BMA keeps doctors informed about the latest trends in the medical profession and healthcare. Through these efforts, the BMA is committed to advancing the interests of doctors while ensuring high standards in the healthcare system.
The Challenge
The British Medical Association (BMA) faced the challenge of providing doctors with a tool to efficiently record their work activities while on the move, track patterns in their workloads, and optimize their job plans. The solution needed to be user-friendly, allowing doctors to access and use it both online and offline. It also had to seamlessly integrate with existing Identity Access Management systems to support Single Sign-On (SSO), ensuring secure and streamlined access for users. Additionally, the tool needed to generate insightful analytics from the collected data, offering actionable metrics to help doctors better manage their time and workload. This would empower doctors to make informed decisions about their work and improve overall productivity and well-being.
Solutions
Development of Doctor Diary:
A comprehensive solution was created in the form of the Doctor Diary tool, designed as both a web application and a mobile app for flexibility. The mobile app enabled offline functionality, allowing doctors to input data even without internet access, with automatic syncing once they are online. To ensure secure access, the tool was seamlessly integrated with the BMA’s Identity Access Management system for Single Sign-On (SSO), making login simple and secure for doctors. Additionally, user-friendly interfaces were designed for both web and mobile versions, ensuring doctors could easily log and manage their activities with minimal training.
Data Analytics and Reporting:
While MS Power BI was used for advanced data visualization and analytics, our role was to structure and deliver the data in a format optimized for Power BI integration. This enabled the generation of detailed reports covering work activity metrics, weekly trends, and annualized job plans. The resulting reports provided doctors with actionable insights, allowing them to track work patterns, optimize schedules, and improve job satisfaction. Additionally, customizable dashboards empowered users to focus on the most relevant metrics for their specific roles and needs.
Technological Stack:
The web application was developed using ASP.Net Core 2.0, C#, and MS Azure SQL Server, ensuring robust performance and scalability. The mobile app was developed using the Ionic framework, making it compatible with both iOS and Android platforms for broader accessibility. Additionally, the cloud infrastructure supported by MS Azure allowed for secure, scalable, and efficient data storage and retrieval.
Security and Compliance:
The solution also incorporated end-to-end encryption to protect sensitive data, both in transit and at rest.
